Confidentiality is a core element of psychotherapy. The Austrian psychotherapy law stipulates that psychotherapists are legally bound to maintain full confidentiality of all information obtained from their patients. This obligation is in place without limitations towards any person or institution, in particular the patient's partner, family, employer or any governmental or social institutions. The confidentiality agreement for psychotherapists is thus significantly stricter than with other medical or social professions, e.g. doctors.
